"Sex and the City" Explores the Lives of Single Women

Created by Darren Star and based on the book of the same name by Candace Bushnell. "Sex and the City" was a major success for the HBO network from 1998 to 2004. The show ended its run on the TV but was so popular that HBO and the producers decided to extend the story of Carries and her three best friends into two feature films. Few shows have been nominated for as many TV industry awards as "Sex and the City" or proved as controversial as the show did with its Frank approach to sexual relationships and important social issues.

"Sex and the City" begins with a pilot episode for the high-flying lawyer, Miranda attended by her three best friends, Carrie, Samantha, and Charlotte. The four women are successful in their various career choices and are concerned they are spending too much of their time in Manhattan looking for the perfect man. At the party, Carrie comes up with an idea to experiment with the idea of women pursuing women in the same way as they have been pursued by men for centuries.

Carrie is a columnist for an unnamed publication and decides to explore the sexual relationships of herself and her friends in a regular column which acts as the narration for the half-hour dramedy format. Carrie is shown to be hiding a casual relationship with the mysterious, Mr. Big who she has problems tying down to a long-term relationship.

The pilot episode highlights the problems the women face having such a tangled series of relationships when Charlotte, an art gallery assistant in early seasons tries to begin a relationship. At the party, she meets a man called Capote who she is attracted to but refuses to sleep with him because of her religious upbringing and beliefs. Capote is annoyed by Charlotte's attitude towards him and leaves her for a night of partying which results in him spending the night with her friend, Samantha. At the same time, Miranda is deciding about the benefits of starting a relationship with a man she has met, Skipper Johnson.

Throughout the first season, the work of Carrie as a journalist is often the spark for a new adventure for one of the women to embark upon. Early in the season, an interview conducted by Carrie with an artist who describes himself as a modelizer is the prompt for Samantha to try and find the man and become one of his conquests.

The relationship between Mr. Big and Carrie continues to cause problems for the writer when she has problems tying him down to an official date to start their relationship and fears he is keeping her a secret from his wider social circle. The women spend much of their time struggling to balance their hopes for a long-term relationship with the range of men offering them short-term relationships and fun in the Big Apple. Samantha has embraced the attempt to approach sexual relationships in a similar way to men. Miranda is struggling to understand her feelings for her nice but less than the ambitious on-off boyfriend. Charlotte is determined to find a long-term relationship and live the happy life she has dreamed of since childhood.

Veteran TV producer, Darren Star began his career as a TV writer before coming to the attention of the public with the creation of primetime soap operas, "Beverly Hills 90210" and "Melrose Place." In 1998, Star took the role of showrunner, producer, and writer of "Sex and the City," a role he kept on the accompanying movies.

Sarah Jessica Parker had been acting since her childhood and had taken a number of roles on TV and in film before finally becoming a breakout star as Carrie Bradshaw. Despite appearing in critically-acclaimed movie's, such as "Tim Burton's Mars Attacks" and "L.A. Story," the actress was still better known for her stage roles than her onscreen work. Since the end of the "Sex and the City" TV show in 2004, Sarah Jessica Parker has been focusing on producing shows through her company, Pretty Matches.

At the start of the show, the character of Samantha was described as the only one who was already in her forties. The character was played by British-Canadian actress, Kim Cattrall who began her Holywood career acting in late-1970s TV shows before moving into movies in the 1980s, such as "Police Academy" and "Big Trouble in Little China." Since completing work on "Sex and the City," Cattrall has worked on TV and in the stage winning plaudits for her role in Noel Coward's "Private Lives" in the U.K.

Despite Darren Star often being linked to the production of "Sex and the City," the work completed by Michael Patrick King as a writer and producer is seen an important to the production. King had worked on various sitcoms since the 1980s and 1990sincluding "Will and Grace" and "Murphy Brown".

Sarah Jessica Parker was the first name Darren Star was considered when he took on the job of adapting the book by Candace Bushnell. The content of the show had given Parker many concerns and she was unsure about a return to TV long before other Hollywood actors had been considering working on the small screen. The pilot and subsequent episodes were shot on location in New York in 1997 as a partnership between HBO Original Productions and Darren Star Productions.

Despite the success it would go on to achieve, "Sex and the City" was given mixed reviews upon its release by professional critics who were unsure about the content of the show. Much of the criticism of the show focused on the sexual nature of much of the content and the blurring of the lines between drama and sitcom. Despite the early criticism, "Sex and the City" received positive audience feedback and has a rating of 71 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.6 on TV.com.

Over the course of its six seasons, "Sex and the City" was broadcast around the world with HBO broadcasting new episodes across North America. HBO still holds the rights to stream "Sex and the City" across the U.S. In other territories, local networks broadcast the show, including Channel 4 in the U.K. and the Nine Network in Australia.

"Sex and the City" is closely associated with its star, Sarah Jessica Parker and the fashion that became as famous as the plot lines. However, after agreeing to appear in the pilot and any subsequent series, Parker admits she did not like the early attempts to develop the show or the fashion involved. Parker was so sure "Sex and the City" would end her career she offered to work on three HBO movies for free if she could be released from her contract.

The early episodes of "Sex and the City" were known for their use of the narration of various characters talking directly to the camera. Despite many shows using this device, usually, this is limited to only one character, not a whole host of characters as used in "Sex and the City".
