"Arrow" Launches The DC Comics Universe

The Tv show, "Arrow" is known as being the starting point for the DC Comics universe which has become rooted on The CW network with a number of spinoffs being born from the series. Regular DC Comics creators, Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg came to the show with co-creator, Marc Guggenheim who is known as the brains behind "Eli Stone" and the writer of the "Green Lantern" movie.

"Arrow," tells the story of the billionaire playboy, Oliver Queen who is returned to his family after spending five years shipwrecked on a deserted island. Oliver has spent the last five years missing after his father's yacht, Queen's Gambit is lost five years earlier. Queen is no longer interested in the same things he was five years earlier with the thrill of living a playboy existence seemingly forgotten.

The return of Oliver to society is happy at first as he is reunited with his family and best friend, Tommy. However, things take a nasty turn when Oliver and Tommy are kidnapped as they walk the streets of Starling City. The kidnappers know Tommy unconscious and set out to interrogate Oliver about his life and the secrets his father told him before he died at sea. From nowhere, Tommy springs into action and kills the three kidnappers to set himself and his best friend free.

The kidnapping reunites Oliver with Detective Quentin Lance, the father of his former girlfriend, Laurel who has had her life ruined by the actions of Oliver. The billionaire reports a man in a green hood entered the hideout of his captors and rescued him from their attempts to keep him under lock and key. Returning home to his family, Oliver's mother, Moira tells Oliver to accept bodyguard John Diggle to allow her to put her mind at ease. The arrival of his bodyguard makes life a little more difficult for Oliver as he has plans to create a new hideout and research lab at a disused warehouse owned by the Queen Corporation. Oliver is forced to use his new found skills to slip away from his bodyguard and work on the development of his lair.

Oliver's former girlfriend, Laurel is now a lawyer who is working to fight for the rights of those less fortunate in Starling City. The latest target for Laurel Lance is Adam Hunt, a business leader who is accused of swindling the people of the Glades, one of the most crime-ridden neighborhoods in the city out of millions of dollars. Laurel puts aside her case against Hunt for a short time to meet Oliver for the first time in five years and tell him of her unhappiness at the problems he caused for her life. Laurel reveals she still blames Oliver for the death of her sister, Sara who he was cheating with on the Queen's Gambit when it sank.

As his apologies for the problems he has caused Laurel falling on deaf ears, Oliver decides to take matters into his own hands and take on the job of returning the stolen money to the people of Starling City. Dressed in the iconic outfit of "Arrow," Oliver Queen sets up a transfer of $40 million from the accounts of Hunt to a fund created to pay back the people swindled out of money in the Glades. The role of Moira in the life of Oliver is also mysterious as she is looking to discover the secrets of her deceased husband who sacrificed his life to save his son when they was lost on the deserted island.

Showrunner Marc Guggenheim is one of the most respected writers in the TV sector after spending much of his career working in this medium. He began his writing career as a part-time occupation while working as a lawyer in Boston. Inspired to write a romantic comedy, Guggenheim met with various producers in Hollywood before settling on a script for the legal drama, "The Practice." After this script was produced, Guggenheim went on to work on various popular shows, including "Law and Order" and "CSI Miami" before focusing his efforts on the DC Comics universe he helped to create with "Arrow" and "Legends of Tomorrow."

Stephen Amell takes the dual role of Oliver Queen and "Arrow" which was the role to launch him to stardom in the U.S. and around the world. Before joining the DC Comics universe, Amell made his debut on the screen in the TV show, "Queer as Folk" and appeared in other shows, such as "Hung" and "90210."

Katie Cassidy appears as the character Laurel Lance in "Arrow," a role which morphs into the Black Canary superhero later in the show. Cassidy has been a popular figure in many horrors and superhero shows such as "When a Stranger Calls" and "Black Christmas." In 2010, Cassidy appeared in the remake of the classic s; asher movie, "A Nightmare on Elm Street."

Filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada, "Arrow" is a co-production between Berlanti Productions, DC Comics Productions, and Warner Bros. Television. The show was first created to draw on the success of "Smallville," the Superman origin show broadcast by The CW. The problem facing the showrunners was the earlier incarnation of "Green Arrow" featured on "Smallville" which Marc Guggenheim wished to leave behind as a character. Eventually, the creators abandoned all mention of the earlier "Arrow" and instead settled for their own origin story and new actor, Stephen Amell in the role.

The world created by "Arrow" is one of the most expansive and detailed ever produced for a TV show. The "Arrowverse," as it has become known as one of the most complex on the TV with The CW taking on a number of spinoffs, including "The Flash," "Legends of Tomorrow," and "Supergirl." The show has become a critical success with the rating provided by Rotten Tomatoes of 85 percent and a score of 75 percent of Metacritic. The second season proved even more of a success with many professional critics reporting the show finally found its true direction with Rotten Tomatoes giving a rating of 95 percent to season two. The show is available in North America in The CW and is simulcast in Canada and the U.S. Netflix has purchased the rights to "The Flash" for streaming and provides episodes on its streaming platform.

In the development of "Arrow," a major inspiration came in the form of the DC Comics hero, "Batman" and the "Dark Knight" trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan. The initial idea fo "Arrow" was far different from the current incarnation of the show with less of a focus on Oliver Queen fighting crime. Instead, the original plot saw Queen captured and imprisoned in a super jail designed for the most dangerous villains on the planet. The seventh season of "Arrow" has been announced as the last and will bring the various plotlines for the show to a close.
